Do you choose a 'word of the year?' Here's what makes this practice different than making resolutions.
With a new year comes a flood of hopes and promises to do things differently: eating better, praying more, reaching out to people more frequently, reading the Bible every day, and probably the number one most broken resolution: exercising more. But along comes the middle of January, and more often than not, well-thought-out resolutions have fallen flat like confetti on New Year's Eve.
Resolutions are often fleeting because they are rooted in one's ability to keep them.
Choosing a 'word of the year' offers a different posture, and possibility, for entering the new year.

Reflecting on her own experiences with words like 'joy' and her new word for 2025, 'come,' Jennifer shares how this practice helps deepen one's experience of God's grace.

Have you considered how many different ways a verse of Scripture can be understood based on where the emphasis is placed? For example, "I will rejoice" takes on a nuanced meaning when emphasized with each of the three words.
In this episode of Living the Grace Life, Jennifer Sakata reflects on Psalm 118:24, "This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it." She explores the richness of gratitude and prayer by emphasizing different words in the verse.
